Upper Mustang with Jeep drive

Overview
Mustang has a long, rich and complex history that makes it one of the most interesting places in Nepal and offering a fantastic landscape and a very untouched life style, culture and tradition which is very much influenced by Tibetans. Mustang has been described as a thumb-like part of Nepal extending into Tibet and Sakyapa form of Tibetan Buddhism is highly practiced, this sect was established at Sakya monastery in Tibet. It is situated the central north of Nepal and behind the Himalayas and rain shaded area so it is unique to trek in summer seasons. Bed and breakfast will be provided during the trek whereas breakfast will be served in Kathmandu. Walking in higher altitude is more physically demanding than walking in the lower altitudes; however, if we are in excellent health with average physical fitness, positive attitude, self confidence and strong determination, we can accomplish the trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly for a few months prior to the trip is a good idea as it will enhance our strength and stability. Past hiking experience is preferred but no technical skill is required. It is important that we consult with our doctor before booking this trek. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood disease should inform Summit Reisen Nepal before booking the trek.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1250 m)
After the transfer to the hotel we have time for a first walk on our own or to relax in the hotel. The capital of Nepal is with its more than 1 million inhabitants, the largest city in the country and cultural and political center of Nepal. BB plan
Day 2: Trek preparation day
Trek preparation day or you can do as optional sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley. BB plan
Day 3: Kathmandu – Pokhara (800 m) 5/6 hours
The scenic drive to Pokhara (about 200 km / depending on the traffic 6-8 hours) leads to first over a small pass out of the Kathmandu valley and then along the Trisuli river. In clear weather, we can also enjoy the views of the snow-covered ice giants of the Himalayan main ridge. Our hotel in Pokhara is located near Lake Phewa in Lakeside Pokhara, so we can relax there after a long drive while walking along the riverside road. The subtropical Pokhara is just 820 meters above sea level.and barely 30 km away as the crow flies, the 8000 giants of ice rise up into the sky. By no means should we miss the sunset over the Phewa Lake. BB plan
Day 4: Pokhara – Marpha (2600m) 6/7 hours
We leave Pokhara and head west. At Beni, the road joins the Kali Gandaki Valley and the further north we go, the less the “road” earns that name. That’s why we are also traveling with jeeps, because with a “normal” car or minibus is here, depending on the weather, no getting through. On the ancient trade route that used to link Tibet with India in earlier times, we follow Kali Gandaki upriver through the deepest breakthrough valley in the world. The view becomes more magnificent every kilometer to the north. While we are in the valley at barely 1000 meters above sea level. are on the way and “work” slowly up to 2-3,00 m, the ice giants Dhaulaghiri and Annapurna rise to the left and right over 8000 m high in the sky. After 150 km and 6-7 hours we reach Marpha one of the most beautiful villages in the Kali Gandaki Valley and known for its excellent apples. We visit the “Kawaguchi House”, which housed the Japanese Zen monk Ekai Kawaguchi on his trip to Tibet in 1899 for several months as accommodation. Also the local monastery is worth a visit. BB plan
Excursion:
Older than the Himalayas, the Kali Gandaki River used to flow towards the Indian Ocean long ago – long before the highest mountains in the world slowly piled up under the pressure of the Indian continental plate. The river worked against the slowly rising mountain masses and dug its bed ever deeper through the masses of rock and cut today the Himalayan ridge from north to south in the deepest breakthrough valley in the world.
Day 5: Marpha – Kagbeni(2810m)1/2 hours
After yesterday’s long and exhausting journey, just under 20 km will bring us to today in kagbeni. We are happy to interrupt the trip on the way and visit the village Thini, the Sakya and Hutsaptemga monastery and the village Syang.Nevertheless, there is still plenty of time to explore Kagbeni in detail. The view back across the Kali Gandaki Riverbed and the ice giants of Annapurna, Nilgiri and Dhaulaghiri is incredible! In the middle of Kagbeni runs the ethnological border of Lower Mustang, where the Thakali tribe live and the Tibetan Buddhist upper Mustang. Even the townscape bears witness to this cultural border. While the south of Kagbeni is dominated by more modern buildings, where we find many of the newer trekking lodgings, The north of the village is dominated by the historical center with mainly traditional Tibetan houses. Despite its low passage, we pass through the Kanim Chorten with its wonderful mandala paintings. We visit the cultural-historical “Red House” with its colossal statue of Maitreya Buddha and the local monastery. Its strategic location on the trade route between Tibet and India and the local routes around Annapurna made the place very important in earlier times. BB plan
Day 6: Kagbeni – Samar(3620m)3/4 hours
We leave, we will visit Thiri Gaon at 2,760m on the western side of the Kali Gandaki River. It is only half an hour’s walk to get there. The effort of the somewhat steep climb to the small Nyingma sanctuary of Thiri is rewarded with a fantastic view of the Kali Gandaki and Kagbeni. On our way to Samar we can already see from afar the idyllic village of Chusang, where we call the “Island of the Dharma”, the name of the Kunza Chöling Monastery complex, which is also Khang Gompa is called. Directly above the southern part of Chusang is located in the heavily eroded rocks with the “Temple of Medicine” a fascinating gem of priceless historical value. The cave temple is most likely from the 11th century and the significant statues of the Dhyani Buddhas suggest a close connection and cultural exchange with the former Kingdom of Guge in Tibet and the important monasteries of Nako, Tabo and Lhalung in the Northern Indian Himalayas in Spiti. Shortly after Chusang we cross the Kali Gandaki River, which in Mustang is also called Mustang Khola and leave the river valley. It first goes up to the small village of Chele (3,100 m) and then over the 3,624 m high Taklam La pass and the 3,660 m high Dajori La pass before we reach Samar, our today’s destination. Already the well-known French ethnologist Michel Peissel stopped here in 1964, when Samar was still the base of the Tibetan Khampa resistance fighters against the Chinese occupiers in Tibet. BB plan
Day 7: Samar – Tsarang (3560m)3/4 hours
Today’s stage to Tsarang (40km) is not very long. The magnificent landscape will always lure us to new photo stops as well as the small villages along the way to a visit. Shortly before Geling / Ghiling we make a detour to the Rangchyung cave with its chorten, one of the oldest sanctuaries in Mustang. Padmasambhava is said to have meditated here. The cave is richly decorated with images of various Buddhas and Padmasambhava itself and some interesting half reliefs. Surrounded by fields is Geling. There are two monasteries and an impressive choir in the middle of the village. Passing the famous red rock cliffs of Tramar / Dhakmar, we finally pass the upper Charang Chu Canyon through a magnificent gate-choir, whose “Heaven” with nine mandalas gives an impressive testimony of traditional Tibetan mandala painting, reaching our today’s destination, Charang / Tsarang. From a distance we can see the red monastery picturesquely on a small hill. A variety of Buddha statues, ornate thangkas and ornate frescoes make this monastery very significant in cultural history. In the immediate vicinity rises the five-storey castle of the old royal palace, which, however, has been empty for a long time and is partly abandoned to decay. A detour also takes us to the significant monastery of Lo Gekar, the monastery of “pure virtue” at an altitude of 3,934 m. From a distance we can see the red monastery picturesquely on a small hill. Day 8: Tsarang – Lo Manthang(3890)
After extensive sightseeing in Tsarang, only a few kilometers separate us from Lo Manthang (3,890 m), the current capital of Mustang. Half the route is marked by the mighty Sumda Chorten and then gently leads up to the Lo La Pass, which offers a view of a spectacular panorama whose center is Lo Manthang.
Surrounded by endless mountain views and the northern plateau, which reaches to the Tibetan border, Lo Manthang has largely preserved the original medieval-looking face to this day. Until a few years ago, the city gate of the defiant fortress walls was closed in the evening. In addition to a tour of the village with its narrow winding lanes, we visit the Maitreya Lakhang, the Thubchen Lhakhang and the “New Monastery” Shakya Chyodi Gompa. Unfortunately, the Royal Palace, which is still inhabited today, is not accessible to visitors. BB plan
Day 9: Sightseeing in & around Lo Manthang
An ascent to the Namgyal Monastery offers us today a beautiful view of the surroundings.Afterwards a trip leads us in the direction of the Tibetan border to the north. BB plan
Day 10: Lo Manthang – Chusang(2980m) 5/6 hours
We need for the 65 km return to Chusang (2,980 m). A short hike takes us to the village of Tetang. On the path that leads from Chusang over the 4,077 m high Gyu La pass to Muktinath, we reach the pretty little village of Tetang after about 15 minutes on our evening walk.A small salt mine has supplied the surrounding villages with the coveted mineral for years. BB plan
Day 11: Chusang – Muktinath(3760m)2/3 hours
Only a few kilometers separate us from Kagbeni, where we sadly leave Upper Mustang behind. We now head east along the former trekking path of the large Annapurna Circuit, which has since been upgraded to the runway, to Muktinath (3,760 m / 20 km). For Hindus and Buddhists, Muktinath is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the Himalayan region. The holy places and temples are not very old, but nevertheless worth seeing. “The Great Sacred Place of the 108 Springs” with the upstream Hindu Muktinath Mandir Temple forms the spiritual center. Unfortunately, non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the multi-storey temple. Also very interesting is the Buddhist Menbal Temple, the “Temple of the Sacred Fire”. Below the altar, natural gas is released in some places, which combines with the oxygen content of the air to form a flammable mixture, allowing blueish flames to dance mystically on the earth and rock bottom and on the surface of a small spring of water. BB plan
Day 12: Muktinath – Tatopani(1015m) 4/5 hours
In the morning we will do some more sightseeing in Muktinath and the surrounding area, before finally returning to Kathmandu. A short drive of about 4/5 hours brings us to our destination in tatopani. In evening time you can enjoy with hot spring watter with cool beer. BB plan
Day 13: Tatopani to pokhara – Pokhara
A longer ride from 4/5 hrs. Through the grandiose landscape brings us back to Pokhara today. BB plan
Day 14: Pokhara – Kathmandu
A spectacular flight along the snow-covered ice giants of the Himalayas takes us back to Kathmandu today (try to get hold of a space on the left side of the plane to clear this view in clear weather) enjoy). Here is some time left for a last exploration BB plan
Day 15: Departure

Useful Information
A typical trekking day
A typical day’s walk lasts from five to seven hours and involves a number of ascents and descents. It is rare to spend much time at the same level. On an organized camping trek, the day is run to a remarkably tight schedule: up at 6 am with a cup of tea, pack the gear before breakfast, start walking at 7 am, stop for lunch around 12 o’clock for about half an hour, start after lunch at noon and stop walking at about 3 pm. The dinner is served around 6.30 pm and followed by a briefing for the next trekking day and then it is time to go to sleep.
Please be aware that this time table may be adjusted according to weather conditions, availability of camp sites, water supply etc.
To ensure you will fully enjoy your trek and make the most of it, we also advise you about the following points which should seriously be taken into account:
Food and Water
Lodges and tea houses are carefully chosen by our staff all along the trek. We will make sure that excellent food will be provided to you and that water is boiled or adequately treated, as this is one of the basic rules for healthy trekking. On a camping trek, your only concern with food is sitting down to eat it! The porters carry all the food along with them and there will be a cook with assistants who can turn out meals of often stunning complexity, like baking a cake
Altitude
Acclimatization is very important for trekking above 3500m. Our trekking schedules have been carefully designed to maximize your ability to acclimatize safely. We ascend slowly and ensure an adequate number of rest days.
However, it is still possible for mountain sickness and your guide will be watching for symptoms with an experienced eye throughout the trip. These symptoms are commonly headache, nausea, lethargy and sometimes breathlessness. If you or any of the group members display any of these symptoms, we will be able to provide informed advice and ensure a proper course of action.
Insurance
Please make sure that your medical insurance policy will cover a helicopter evacuation if needed since the fee for such an evacuation can amount to US$ 2000.00 per rescue. Please also check the maximum altitude to which you are covered. Sometimes, you have to subscribe a complementary insurance above 4000 m.
First aid kit
Although a first aid kit is provided, we strongly recommend that you take with you the medicine we listed in the equipment check-list as well as your personal medicines as prescribed by your physician
Trekking permit
A valid permit is required for certain areas. In order to obtain it (upon your arrival), two working days and two passports size photographs are required.
Money
Everything is included in the price of the trek, except for the purchase of water and soft / hard drinks so we advise you to always carry Nepalese rupees during your trek. The amount to be carried depends on the area and the duration of the trek.
Be a responsible trekker and minimize your Impact
- Although trekking in the Himalayas plays a vital role in the economy of many mountain areas, it also may have a negative impact which has become a major concern.
- From an ecological point of view, always carry your rubbish with you, drink treated water instead of mineral water in order to reduce the use of plastic bottles.
- Be respectful of the flora and the fauna.
- From a human point of view, please respect Nepalese culture and traditions. It is a good thing before leaving for the trek to have a look at the “Do and Don’t” since an inappropriate behavior, though considered normal in Western countries, could severely shock or hurt local people.
- Do not “steal” pictures and always ask permission from the person before photographing them.
- Please do not give money or sweets to the children directly on your trip, as this encourages them to beg and may contribute to dental problems. If you would like to give something back, you can assist with our charity work by volunteering or giving a donation.
